Jeffery M. Plumblee, II

Research Assistant, Department of Civil Engineering

Clemson University

In August 2008, Jeffery M. Plumblee, II began his graduate work at Clemson University in the Department of Civil Engineering under Leidy Klotz.  Since that time, he has been conducting research with the Resilient Home Program.  His research focuses on methods for analyzing the effectiveness, economic feasibility, and environmental impacts of residential hurricane mitigation retrofit techniques.  Plumblee completed his MS in civil engineering in December 2009. In April 2010, Plumblee was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.  Plumblee’s Ph.D. dissertation topic studies the relationship between environmental sustainability and disaster resistant products.  He plans to use life-cycle assessment data and a probabilistic analysis of the effectiveness of disaster resistant products to develop a framework for determining the environmental breakeven point of these products.

In March 2009, Plumblee founded Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries (CEDC), a student organization that provides engineering design services to underdeveloped international communities.  Since that time, Plumblee, along with advisor Lansford Bell, have expanded the organization from 6 students to a recurring 1 hour design course of 25 to 30 students.

Plumblee interned with the consulting engineering firm Britt, Peters, and Associates from May to August 2008.  Plumblee worked on civil design drawings, performed hydrology calculations, and served as a field engineer.  He also completed a CEPSCI (Certified Erosion Prevention and Sedimentation Control Inspector) course in August 2008.  Prior to his work at Britt, Peters, and Associates, Plumblee spent 8 summers working at Plumblee Surveying as an IT specialist and field assistant.

He is currently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries, and Mensa.
